With the introduction into North America of the PROGNOST mobile, elevating x-ray tables from Protec in Germany, there are some questions about what some of the names mean that are associated with these tables. This is a good forum to explain ...

Provotec is listed on some of the documents concerning these tables. Provotec of Germany was the original manufacturer of these x-ray tables. Provotec was acquired by Protec Medical of Germany in 2010. The similarity between the names Provotec and Protec is merely a coincidence as they were previously 2 separate companies, but now 1.

Protec Medical of Germany is the largest privately-held manufacturer of x-ray film processors in the world today. With the acquisition of Provotec in 2010, Protec was able to expand its product offering to include x-ray tables, x-ray systems, C-arms, and DR buckys. All Provotec manufacturing has now been successfully transferred and assimilated into Protec's manufacturing center in Oberstenfeld, Germany.

PROGNOST is the brand name coined by Provotec for the line of mobile, elevating x-ray tables that Protec now manufactures. There is a loyal following for the PROGNOST brand, so no name change is planned. One can speculate that the name PROGNOST was coined as a shortened version of the word "prognostic," meaning predictive of something in the future. That is certainly one of the results of x-ray, helping to deliver a prognosis for the future.

The highest end PROGNOST mobile, elevating table is the model XPE-Akku. What does the "-Akku" mean? Akku in German means battery, and the XPE-Akku is the battery-powered version. Makes sense!

Hopefully, this explains the origin and meaning of some of the names associated with this premier line of mobile, elevating x-ray tables.

Western Blot X-Ray Film Processors

Although it is fast becoming a digital world, there is still a place for x-ray film processors in the world of blot analysis, specifically Western, Northern and Southern Blot techniques. The term "blotting" refers to the transfer of biological samples from a gel to a membrane, and their subsequent detection on the surface of the membrane. RNA, DNA, and Proteins are the three major macromolecules that are essential for all known forms of life, and blot techniques are used to identify their presence.

The Northern Blot is an analytical technique used in molecular biology research to study gene expression through detection of RNA in a tissue sample. Northern blotting allows one to observe a particular gene's expression pattern betweens tissues, organs, developmental stages, environmental stress levels, pathogen infection, and over the course of a treatment protocol. The hybrid signals are detected by x-ray film and can be quantified by densitometry.

The Southern Blot is a technique routinely used in molecular biology for detection of a specific DNA sequence in DNA samples. After hybridization, excess probe is washed from the membrane and the pattern of hybridization is visualized on x-ray film by autoradiography in the case of a radioactive or fluorescent probe.

The Western Blot (also called the Protein Immunoblot) is a more widely used analytical technique used to detect specific proteins in the given sample of tissue homogenate or extract. The specific proteins are separated through electrophoresis by the use of labeled antibodies. This enables the identification of a target protein in a complex protein mixture. Western blotting can also produce qualitative and semi-quantitative data about the protein.

The most sensistive detection methods in Western Blot use a chemiluminescent substrate that will produce light when combined with the enzyme. The light is a transient product of the enzyme-substrate reaction and is measureable only as long as the reaction occurs. In well-optimized assays using proper antibody dilutions and sufficient substrate, the reaction may produce stable light output for 1 to 24 hours, allowing consistent and sensitive detection with x-ray film or digital imaging equipment. The light output can be captured using x-ray film or a CCD digital imaging system. X-ray film is the most sensitive method and can provide the most detail because x-ray film is more densely coated with photo-reactive molecules than a CCD digital imaging detector has photo sensors. In addition, the x-ray film is placed nearly in direct contact with the blot, separated only by a thin transparent plastic sheet, allowing more light photons to collide and interact with the film emulsion than with a CCD digital detector that may be located behind one or more focusing lenses. For these reasons, x-ray film exposure times are shorter than those required when using digital imaging equipment.

So despite a world that is becoming more digitized, x-ray film still has a place thanks to blot analysis which means x-ray film processors still have a place. FI Sales offers 2 models perfect for developing of blots.

LED vs. Laser Therapy

A Digital Imaging Cautionary Tale

Be very careful with whom you choose to do business when buying a digital x-ray system. That's the moral to this story of a digital sale gone bad.

Towards the end of 2010, we were bidding a Sedecal digital x-ray system to a local veterinarian. We had exhibited at the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association meeting in November of 2010, met there with the local vet, and provided him a quotation for a 9 mega-pixel Vet-Ray CCD DR system from Sedecal at a great year-end price. We didn't get the order in 2010, but we held out hope that he would buy from us in 2011. Our hopes were buoyed by further requests from the local vet in 2011 to update our quotation.

We worked with the vet in 2011. We invited him to Sedecal's North American headquarters for a tour and a demonstration of the system. We arranged to have a dog available for some test shots. Anyone visiting Sedecal's North American headquarters can see that they always have digital imaging systems on the shelf, ready for installations across the continent. We refined our quote to meet the needs of the local vet's practice. He was ready to buy. That's when this story turns sad.

It seems as if this local vet had signed an order form and placed a deposit with a competitor at the end of 2010. While Sedecal was filling orders and installing systems right up to the end of 2010, all this competitor could offer was a long lead time. So when our local vet tried to cancel his order with the competitor, he was told that his order was non-cancellable. The reason given was that materials were already allocated to his order, and to cancel his order, he would have to forfeit his whole 50% deposit. That is utter nonsense as our local vet was not ordering anything but a standard system. So if he cancelled his order, the system should be ready to deliver to the next buyer of a standard system. And by the way, the competitor's "standard" system was only a 6 mega-pixel resolution system with a 2-way float top table for MUCH MORE MONEY than Sedecal's 9 mega-pixel resolution system with a 4-way float top table and MANY more features. I felt bad for our local vet, but unless he could cancel his order and get his deposit back, there wasn't much we could do.

Unfortunately, there was no way he was getting his deposit back. With a small manufacturer like our competitor is, once the deposit money comes in, it is spent on salaries, materials, etc. If our local vet had done his homework, he would have discovered that our competitor had sprung from the ashes of a bankrupt company just a few years ago. That's how some folks like to do business in the USA these days. Set up a corporation, pull a big salary, run the company into the ground, go bankrupt, and do it all over again ... all under the protection of US bankruptcy laws.

So here is where our cautionary tale ends. Our local vet is stuck with a lesser product at a higher price from a company that may or may not be in business during the length of the warranty. But there are lessons to be learned:
1) Know the history and size of the digital supplier with whom you are dealing. Make sure you won't be looking for warranty support in 2 years from a company that needs your order to last 2 more weeks in business.
2) Make sure your quotation clearly shows the specifications for what you intend to purchase. Don't get fooled by big talk about minimal specs. Have your proposed supplier put it in writing.
3) Ask for references and more than just 1 or 2. Everyone has 1 or 2 buddies that they can count on to say nice things about them.
4) Ask how your proposed supplier will support any warranty issues, especially if they are not working with a local x-ray dealer on the install.
5) Know the core competancy of your proposed supplier. Are they really a "manufacturer" of digital x-ray systems, or do they simply purchase pieces and assemble them at your location.
6) Ask about hidden costs like annual maintenance fees, seat licenses, extended warranties, etc.

Many practices are wondering these days about when to go digital. There are many advantages to digital imaging:

No expenses for chemical, film, or monthly maintenance
Ability to manipulate and improve image quality, thereby reducing retakes
Improved processing speed, especially with DR
Ability to easily store and transit images digitally
And many more ...

So if a practice can afford digital, then by all means they should purchase a name brand digital system from a respected manufacturer. Be cautious of off-brands that may be as much as $10,000 less expensive, but may not be around in 2 years when support is needed.

But what about practices that are short on funds and are conservative with the funds they have? I have seen estimates from $2 to $5 per film for the cost of processing an x-ray film using a chemical x-ray film processor. Then ROI (return on investment) calculations can be made to justify the purchase or lease cost of the digital system. But for the practices that only process a few x-ray films per week or even per month, the numbers just don't add up in favor of digital imaging.

At this point, most hospitals, orthopedic clinics, and large general practices have already made the switch to digital. Large chiropractic, podiatric, and veterinary practices are moving into digital at a fast pace. Is The Recession Over?

Has it been 4 months since our last blog entry? Between Medica, RSNA, and NAVC, winter and spring was a busy time for FI Sales. We will try and be more faithful bloggers the rest of 2010.

2010 started out slow for us, but progressively picked up sales momentum. January seemed like just another recession month, despite a strong showing at FI Sales. February picked up some sales momentum and March has been our best month since the recession started. And we will start April with some strong orders and billings to start our second quarter off with a bang.

Now we're not ready to proclaim that the recession is over, but we are cautiously optimistic with some of the signs we are seeing. And it's not just us. We're hearing from others that sales are on the rise.

So we move forward into 2010 confident, but cautious. We continue to offer parts for Fischer Industries, Protec, Summit QCP, Kodak MXP, JPI JP-33, and Alphatek AX200. In addition, Protec ECOMAX and OPTIMAX x-ray film processors continue to find new homes through our dealer network. FI Sales will soon be introducing the FI EcoTank which is a "no plumbing" version of the ECOMAX for veterinary use. Our line of veterinary surgical equipment is strong with a surgical laser, electrosurgical units, and cryosurgical devices. We also are looking at an acquisition, and we hope to have some news of some major additions to our product offering. We held our nose while we rode out the recession, and it sure smells nice to breathe in the fresh smell of spring and a better business climate these days.

FI Sales at Medica and RSNA

FI Sales is off to Medica, the largest medical trade show in the world, but first stop is at Protec, the largest x-ray film processor manufacturer in the world. FI Sales is proud to offer the Protec ECOMAX, OPTIMAX, and OPTIMAX 2010-NDT exclusively in North America. But the #1 topic of conversation at Protec for our visit will be digital. Wisconsin VMA Meeting

We took the FI Sales products on the road to Madison, WI for the Wisconsin VMA meeting this past weekend. Madison is a lovely little city and I stayed in a Bed & Breakfast called the Hotel Ruby Marie (http://www.rubymarie.com/) that was charming, close & comfortable, so I enjoyed my stay in Madison. The WI VMA put together a nice meeting for exhibitors, and we had plenty of traffic through the exhibit hall. Unfortunately, the effects of the recession are still being felt and true "buyers" were the exception rather than the rule.

We counted 13 companies offering digital x-ray. WOW! FI Sales was the only company to exhibit a processor (Protec ECOMAX), and I am pleased to report that I did not bring it home. It found a new home with an x-ray dealer.

Most of the product interest was directed toward the Cryosuccess, our cryosurgical device. Our hope is for a couple sales resulting from the show.

X-Ray Industry Changes

Lots of news recently coming out of the x-ray industry ...

Sound Technology's parent company VCA Antech has acquired Eklin. See http://www.soundeklin.com/company/news/vca-antech-inc-completes-merger-eklin-medical-systems-inc for the official announcement. Looks like the new company name is Sound-Eklin. Clever. Although there has been some talk of flat panel DR prices rising with the merger, I'm not sure whether this economy will support any digital imaging price increases. Still lots of choices out there. Time will tell.

Economic Recovery?

January and February sure seemed to be the worst months in this recession. We saw improvement in March, and April has been a very good month for us. However, we continue to run across vendors and customers that have disappeared, unable to cope with the business slowdown.

FI Sales continues to move forward, with plans to expand build a new office area within our facility and add sales staff to handle our expanding product offering. In the works is a digital catalog for all our products.

Although we ran out of Protec OPTIMAX processors, more are on the way and the ship should be docking in North America this week, with plenty of OPTIMAX processors reaching us by early next week. We have plenty of ECOMAX processors on hand with more arriving next week.

Are we out of the recession? Probably not, but I do think better days are ahead.

Med1Online Closes Friday, 4/10/09 and Faces Liquidation

Well, isn't that just wonderful? FI Sales is one of Med1Online's creditors, and we will apparently lose some money as Med1Online closes. Of course we will continue collections efforts until our collections experts tell us it is a lost cause. We are not alone. As recently as last week we advised one of our competitors to limit their transactions with Med1Online after I had a phone conversation with Med1Online's founder, Scott Carson. Too late. Our competitor was about to begin the collections process with med1Online. We did invite them to join us and another company in a lawsuit against Med1Online. Too late now as Med1Online's doors are shuttered.

Was it the economy that sunk Med1Online? Perhaps that was a part. To me, it simply appeared the company was another example of an upside-down company ... top-heavy with highly-compensated management supported through highly-leveraged finances, but with insufficient sales. Hey, there's a great business model. The founder of Med1Online, Scott Carson, told me in a phone call last week that he personally lost millions in Med1Online. Well, boo-hoo. I wish I was in a position to have lost millions in a business venture ... and then I wouldn't have!

Med1Online is just another example of over-indulgence and excess that has contributed to the state our economy is in today. FI Sales is not on the fast track to the Fortune 500, but we are also debt-free and continue to grow, albeit slowly in this stagnant economy. Although we will lose some money due to the Med1Online closure, we will survive and continue on our current successful path.

So to Med1Online, rather than saying Rest In Peace, I offer Good Riddance.

New Parts Price Lists for Fischer Industries and Protec

It is that time of the year again to revise parts pricing.

A new Protec Parts Price List went into effect in March. That's the one where we LOWERED price on 46 items and only raised prices on 3! How's that for economic stimulus?

PROTEC Acquires PROVOTEC

FI Sales is pleased to inform you that PROTEC GmbH & Co. KG – medical systems - in Oberstenfeld, Germany has acquired the majority shareholding of PROVOTEC GmbH in Espelkamp, Germany.

By taking this step, PROTEC will continue to strengthen their position in the world-wide market for medical imaging systems. In the future PROTEC will be able to offer complete x-ray systems for the digital direct radiography sector including x-ray generators, x-ray tubes, bucky tables, detectors and image acquisition software. Of course, PROTEC will also include complete analog systems in the product range.

Surviving This Economy as a Small Business

How does any small business survive in this economy today? Sometimes I wonder, but at FI Sales we are surviving and some would say even flourishing. As a debt-free company, we don't have to worry about loan payback or credit card balances. We continue to invest our profits into the business, but we have lived within our means and not accrued debt. We are broadening our product offering, making sure our support services are up to date and of value, and lowering our prices. That's right, we're lowering our prices.

We just posted a new Protec Parts Price List dated 3/4/09. Our offering has expanded since we first started offering parts for Protec processors. More importantly, we have lowered prices on 46 items while raising prices on only 3 items. This is a small part of our business as Protec processors are known for their incredible reliability, but as long as we are in a position to pass along savings where we can to our dealers and customers, we will. We also plan for a 2009 with no price increase on the price of the Protec ECOMAX and OPTIMAX x-ray film processors. The ECOMAX remains the best processor bargain on the market today.

We just got one of life's little surprises recently. From 2003-2005, Kodak sold the MXP 104 x-ray film processor. It turns out that unit was made by Protec for Kodak, and it is exactly the same as the Protec OPTIMAX that we stock and offer today. The parts are identical, so we have begun offering replacement parts for the Kodak MXP 104. Carestream (Kodak) has now "discovered" FI Sales, and they are sending customers to FI Sales for MXP 104 parts. Nice little surprise for us and for practices that own a Kodak MXP 104. Now MXP 104 owners have a stocking source for parts in the USA.

FI Sales at the Oklahoma VMA Meeting

The travelling FI Sales road show headed to Oklahoma City with cautious optimism for a good turnout at the Oklahoma VMA. Good? It was great! Aisles were packed with vets that were genuinely interested in product displayed.

FI Sales was invited to display selected products within the DVM Resources booth. Thanks to the folks at DVM Resources for a great opportunity. What a nice offer for which we are very grateful. FI Sales product displayed included:

Interest in the laser was good, but interest in the Pulsovet was sky high. We hope to close 2-3 sales leads after the show through DVM Resources.

If not for an ice storm that slowed truck shipments into Oklahoma, one local x-ray dealer, Friese X-Ray, would have displayed an x-ray film processor, our Protec OPTIMAX. As it was, none of the 4 local x-ray dealers at the show displayed an x-ray film processor. I was the only representative of any processor manufacturer present. How the x-ray industry has changed! X-Ray suppliers now openly sell direct. In Oklahoma, companies like Fovea, Eklin and Idexx manned booths, selling directly to the practices. Now is a good time to make this perfectly clear … FI SALES ALWAYS SELLS THROUGH DISTRIBUTORS! Although that policy has changed for others, that will not change for FI Sales. We value our distributor relationships.

During the OK VMA show, FI Sales secured exclusive representation rights for a new product line that will be announced shortly. More quality product for our distributors!

On to the Arkansas VMA show next weekend! In addition to the Arkansas VMA, FI Sales will have the Preci-Laser CO2 30 watt surgical laser on display in the DVM Resources booth at the Indiana VMA. But for now, it will be good to be home for the Super Bowl.

Thoughts on TNAVC 2009

As I fly home from The North American Veterinary Conference (TNAVC), I ruminated on many topics and had some thoughts to share with you.

First, the weather, although chilly, is still SOOOOOOO much better in Orlando on the chilliest days than in Chicago in the winter. No rain during the days, but a couple chilly evenings. The “heated” pool at our hotel must have been heated with 1 can of sterno. Brrrr.

After experiencing very low attendance at some Q408 trade shows, it was nice to see TNAVC with decent attendance. Sure, attendance was down, but the show was not empty like others. People attended and they were buying. Our Protec ECOMAX x-ray film processor was spoken for on Day 1 and hauled away at show close!

And speaking of x-ray film processors, FI Sales was the only booth exhibiting an x-ray film processor … the Protec ECOMAX. Our former competition just shows digital now, and several competitors don’t exhibit at all. That suits us just fine. For folks shopping for x-ray film processors, we are the only game in town! And we still meet vets that are hand-dipping films that are ready to take the step up to automatic processing. Yes, it is a digital world today, but we continue to sell x-ray film processors.

Our 30 watt veterinary surgical laser was well-received and just plain fun to play with and demo in the booth. We left several apples in Orlando with our laser doodles on them. We may have an announcement shortly about an addition to our laser offering as a result of meetings at TNAVC. Fingers crossed!

Our Pulsovet 3000-DS digital cardioscope generated a lot of attention that we will try to turn into sales now after the show. Our Mini-Max Vapor Cleaner was damaged in transit to the show, so we kept that product out of the limelight at the show. We hope to introduce the Mini-Max to the market shortly.

We continue to work cooperatively with JPI America, a competitor on x-ray film processors, but a supplier of ours on portable x-ray and cassettes/screens which we displayed at TNAVC. From TNAVC show staff dealing with exhibitor complaints, we heard several stories of companies slandering competitors at the show. I personally know of a couple digital imaging suppliers that shouldn’t be in the same room (or exhibit hall) together. Why can’t we speak of our product and company’s advantages with points rooted in fact rather than with slanderous comments regarding our competition? We are all just trying to make a living.

Finally, TNAVC offers a Sports Bar on Sunday with big screen TVs that feature the NFL playoff games. Thanks! It always draws a nice crowd. But what really warmed my heart was seeing 3 times the crowd of the NFL games gathered around the big screens for the inauguration, with applause erupting during President Obama’s inauguration speech. I really do hope we heed his message as a nation, roll up our sleeves, work cooperatively, and once again make the USA an economic superpower.

The North American Veterinary Conference - TNAVC

We are less than a week away from our most exciting trade show of the year ... TNAVC, The North American Veterinary Conference in Orlando from 1/18/09 through 1/21/09. And after the brutal winter we have experienced so far in Chicago, we are ready to feel the sun.

We will be joined in Orlando at the show by personnel from Preci-Laser, the manufacturer of our veterinary surgical laser that we represent in the USA. Not only will we be showing a laser as a new product, but also the Pulsovet Digital Cardioscope and the Mini-Max Vapor Cleaner. We will be crowded in the booth, but that's a good problem to have.

New Year's Resolutions and Good Competition

New Year’s resolutions abound this time of the year. One of mine is to blog more in 2009, reporting more about FI Sales, good and bad. There may be plenty of bad news to report. The economy is reeling, and x-ray film processors continue to be replaced by CR and DR at incredible rates. But the future is ours to make, and we move forward into 2009 with a positive approach with quality product competitively priced.

I got a jump on my 2009 resolution right at the end of 2008 with a posting that included some bad news about a competitor that I found online. That competitor took exception to our blog, and asked that it be removed. I respected their request and removed that post, although I will most certainly be posting more information about various competitors in the future. That’s all part of capitalism, comparing our product and company with the competition.

FI Sales tries to be a good competitor. We stick with the documented facts and do not spread rumors. Having worked at Fischer Industries for almost 8 years, I dealt with rumors about Fischer’s demise for … almost 8 years! It wasn’t fun, so we try and stick to the facts about our competition. As it turned out, the Fischer doomsayers were eventually right!

We also work cooperatively with our competitors. We feature JPI portable x-ray on our web-site, and are currently evaluating an Alphatek product accessory, although they are both tough competitors on x-ray film processors. We will increase our competitive comparisons this year, in order to let you know where our product and company stands compared to the competition. The competition may not like those comparisons, but we will stick to facts.

So far the year is off to a good start and we have completed a successful inventory count. I am off to present FI Sales product at a DVM Resources sales meeting and have 2 hours to fill. In just one year we have added enough product that 2 hours are easily filled. We have increased our product offering to include a veterinary surgical laser, digital cardioscope, and a veterinary vapor cleaner. I just hope my voice holds out for 2 hours.

Then it is off to The North American Vet Conference in Orlando starting 1/18. We hope that TNAVC is better attended than some recent conferences at the close of 2008. Well, at least the weather is guaranteed to be better than Chicago.

Remembering 2008, Thoughts on RSNA, & a Look to 2009

One year ago, Fischer Industries closed and all employees were without employment. FI Sales was then born, and we have not only survived, but have grown the business throughout 2008. We have much to be thankful for:
> Dealers who were sending us Fischer parts orders from our first day in business
> Dealers who changed brands to Protec x-ray film processors
> Protec who has kept us well-supplied with excellent quality product and support
> Vendors who took a chance on a new business and supplied us parts
> Competitors who have worked cooperatively with us
> Customers we also consider friends

Thank you for your part in making FI Sales a viable, growing, profitable business in 2008.

RSNA provided us a glimpse of a rapidly changing industry. No Fischer Industries, AFP Imaging, or Hope X-Ray exhibiting, although the latter 2 companies have escaped Fischer's fate and I have been assured they are thriving. The only processors we saw at RSNA were in booths at JPI and Alphatek, and of course in our own Protec/FI Sales booth where we displayed the Protec ECOMAX. Maybe there were other exhibitors with a processor hidden somewhere in their booth display, but they escaped our view. So are the companies who saved the RSNA expense smarter than the ones who exhibited processors? Hard to say. The bottom line is that Protec/FI Sales made a significant investment in a 20' booth at RSNA and we were able to pick-up some new processor sales. However, much of the dealer interest was directed towards the new Protec digital imaging CR & DR solutions. We are excited to offer Protec digital solutions in 2009.

In addition to Protec's digital imaging solutions, FI Sales will also be offering other new products in 2009 including a veterinary surgical laser, digital cardioscope, radiation detection products, and more. We will be packed in booth #600 at TNAVC in January with new products. There is no doubt that 2009 will be a challenging economic year for the USA. FI Sales is ready for the challenges and opportunities 2009 may bring.
